Facebook’s 30 Day Song Challenge – Day 12

Day 12 – A song from a band you hate. The Libertines – ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’

There are a lot of different ways I could have gone with this. Hip Hop. Most ‘dance’ music. R&B. More or less anything in the charts right now. But they’re all such easy targets I thought I’d take on something, the appeal of which I have just never understood.

There was a wave of bands in the early-mid part of the first decade of the new millennium which garnered a lot of praise and attention. Razorlight. The Fratellis. The Pigeon Detectives. The View. All of which were entirely interchangeable and as such their appeal was utterly lost on me – at the risk of sounding like an old man, they all sounded the same. No originality, no sound of their own, nothing at all to recommend them. A big grey mush. And at the centre of it all were The Libertines – in my opinion the most over-hyped and over-rated band for many, many years.

So I hate them. I hate them all. And here, should you choose to subject yourself to it, is one of their videos. Can we forget this category and move on now, please?
