Facebook’s 30 Day Song Challenge – Day 3

Day 3 – A song which makes you happy. Foo Fighters – ‘Learn To Fly’

I don’t have a ‘favourite’ band, but the Foos are definitely in my notional top ten. No matter that the last couple of albums (until ‘Wasting Light’) had become a bit stale, they are still capable of cranking up the volume and knocking out a power-pop gem like this. Even the bloated ‘In Your Honour’ had ‘Best of You’ on it. They’ve been around so long they’re part of the rock furniture, but you wouldn’t want to sit on a chair that didn’t have the Foo Fighters as the very legs holding it up!

What a bizarre analogy. Not sure where I was going with that. Anyway, if I’m ever in need of a bit of a lift, like as not I’ll put either ‘The Colour and the Shape’ or ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’ on, and turn it up. Their songs are often deceptively simple, but always efficient and effective. ‘Learn To Fly’ does exactly what it says on the tin – it picks you up and carries you off.

Great video too – the Foos are the absolute masters of the funny video which becomes a work of art in its own right – this is by no means an isolated case, check out ‘Everlong’ with the expanding Hand Of Justice, or ‘Big Me’ with Dave in pigtails.

If I had a hero – which I don’t – he might just be Dave Grohl. Not only supremely talented but also down to earth, charming and extremely funny, like the perfect dinner party guest. He’s certainly someone I greatly admire.
