All over for another year

Held off writing today until I knew the result of the men’s semi finals at Wimbledon.

Well, that’s it. I hate to say I told you so, but…

What a shame. Murray’s form had really picked up during the tournament, but he made far too many mistakes today to get past a competitor like Nadal. However, this was his best-ever chance – with Federer out and the relative unknown Thomas Berdych through to the final, we’re all saying now what we said about Tim Henman every summer ten years ago – he may never have a better chance to win it.

But I stick by something I’ve often said about Andy Murray – he will win a Grand Slam one day, but it won’t be Wimbledon. And in a tenuous Hawkeye analogy…how many challenges does he have remaining?

But where one underdog is mercilessly put out of our misery, another one triumphs. And what a triumph it is for Holland. Didn’t I say they were playing well, and playing for each other? That goodwill and creativity on the football pitch has carried them past perennial tournament favourites Brazil and straight into a semi final showdown with…probably Uruguay, who play Ghana tonight. Who would bet against the boys in orange going all the way? Hup Holland Hup!
